students at sumner courthouse

The gifted students of R. H. Bearden Elementary School recently visited the Sumner Courthouse on November 28, 2023. The students were studying a unit on Voting in Mississippi. The students were greeted by the Courthouse staff and were guided by Ms. Daphane Neal, Circuit Clerk.  Ms. Neal introduced the students to information/forms that would be needed to vote. The students were very curious and had several questions prepared to ask Ms. Neal.  Ms. Neal also encouraged the students to stay on the "right" side of the law, not only to keep their voting rights, but to stay out of trouble. The students discussed the struggle that others went through so that they would have the right to vote.

While in the courtroom, Ms. Neal demonstrated how a trial would take place.  Each student had a position, the pretend judge and the shoplifter.  The pretend judge gave the shoplifter on trial eleven years to serve in jail. The students were encouraged to continue to be their best and get their education.

The students also had the experience of dining at Sumner Grille. They enjoyed the trip and are thankful for the opportunity to explore new and informative things.
