R. H. Bearden Elementary Quest Gifted Enrichment Program caught the eyes of MHP
Captain Cooper. The students' treat to eat at Mama Hamils earned them recognition for
demonstrating excellent behavior. Captain Cooper, who was not in uniform, was preparing to
leave as the kids were being seated. He and his family members spoke with Ms. Pointer and
commended her on her role in educating our students. However, their focus was mainly on how
the students were so well-behaved. Ms. Pointer had no idea that he was a trooper. Several
people seemed to look at the students in amazement as they went to fix their plates, ate, went
to the restroom, and conversed at the table.
Captain Cooper had previously called the school. He said that he was determined to find
the gifted class. Captain Cooper said that he really felt good to hear that we were from
Tallahatchie County which is one of the counties under his leadership. He said that I was like a
drill sergeant. He laughed when I told the kids to line up as we were preparing to go outside.
Captain Cooper and three other Highway Patrolmen, including Trooper Brown visited the
students last Thursday. The troopers took a beautiful picture with Superintendent Dr. Ellington.
Superintendent Dr. Ellington stated that the troopers said that the students were great and
respectful.
Principal Spicer expressed that she was very proud of the students. She reminded them that
“Exemplifying Excellence Without Excuses” has gotten them recognized.
He spoke with the kids and encouraged them. He and the other troopers shook the
students’ hands and took pictures. Each student was given a $25 gift card. They were really
excited to meet the troopers and receive the cards.
Trooper Brown as well as Captain Cooper expressed to Ms. Pointer that you never know
who is watching what you are doing. It meant a lot for my efforts to be noticed. However, Ms.
Kennedy , Mr. Rice and I worked as a team to ensure that the students were safe as they
enjoyed themselves. We are thankful to the parents for entrusting their children with us.
The parents would also like to thank Representative Rosebud, Brian B. Washington and
Captain Cooper and the MHP troopers who visited the students.
In the words of Superintendent Dr. Ellington, “We Can, We Can ,Take My Hand” and
together we can expose our students to great opportunities.
